SCPGA Teacher of the Year Randy Chang shares his secrets to golf successAsk Randy Chang about his teaching style and he'll sum it up in one word: SURF. The acronym stands for simple, understandable, retention and fun, and it's a formula that has worked well for the Director of Instruction at Journey at Pechanga in Temecula and the founder of Randy Chang Golf Schools. Chang was named the Southern California PGA Teacher of the Year for a second time in August, which is a credit to his teaching abilities and his easy-going style. “The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed,” Chang explained, "but the program and process are regimented and seriously effective.” Chang’s programs, such as Pechanga’s Tiny Tees lessons, Journey Golf Academy and Golf for Girls seasonal clinics, go hand-in-hand with SCPGA’s mission of growing the game. He is dedicated to early golf education and believes that encouraging youth’s positive habits by way of golf sets a precedent for a healthy lifestyle in the future. “Randy possesses that trait of never ceasing to want to learn to be a better coach and instructor,” said SCPGA Executive Director/CEO Tom Addis III. “And for that he will continue to be a top PGA professional.” Chang took time out to share a few thoughts on his career, teaching philosophy and how everyday golfers can most efficiently improve their games… In this video, Randy Chang explains why hand-eye coordination is not required to be a good golfer. How does it feel to be a two-time SCPGA Teacher of the Year? I am so humbled to be one of the very few who received an SCPGA award, and what I am even more grateful for is that the award recognized what I’m most proud of in my career: teaching. • • • Why teaching? My number one mission in the golf industry is to spread my passion for the sport to our youth to not only inspire them to adopt healthy lifestyles, but to also teach them proper form when they’re young so that it carries on throughout whatever golf career they may have. • • • What is the most rewarding thing about being a golf instructor? Watching an entire family that you got into the game go out to play golf together. What’s the best golf tip you’ve ever received? Keep your head down and listen for the putt to go in. • • • What’s your No. 1 golf drill for students? L2L. Turn your back to the target and form a L with the club and lead arm. Swing to the finish forming a backwards L with your arm and the club, getting to a tippy toe finish. Sweep the grass, hold your finish for three seconds. • • • What’s the most common swing problem you encounter with your students and how do you correct it? Over-the-top, casting, chicken winging, slicing swings. Correct it with the L2L swing drill. What might someone be surprised to know about you? I have six kids and two grandchildren. • • • What is your most treasured golf possession? My PGA membership card. • • • What is your motto on the golf course? SFCDEA. See it, feel it, commit, do it, evaluate and adjust. • • • Who’s in your dream foursome? Tiger Woods, my son Jordon, and Danielle Kang. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE
