The Crossings at Carlsbad

Ocean views add to the ambience
at North San Diego muni

The Crossings at Carlsbad may seem short by today’s standards at 6,835 yards from the tips, but the fact that it’s spread out over 400 acres of environmentally protected terrain with several forced carries off the tee means golfers need to do something that’s not easy to do – hit their target.
Owned by the city of Carlsbad and opened in 2007, the 18-hole, par-72 layout designed by Greg Nash presents one of the nicest municipal golf courses in Southern California. The course will challenge your nerves and accuracy, and large greens with multiple tiers and undulations will put your putting skills to the test.
Here’s a closer look at the Carlsbad course and all that it has to offer…
     TALE OF TWO NINES
The Crossings offers panoramic ocean views from every hole on the front 9, while the back 9 takes you into a canyon with dramatic elevation changes and stunning views of Carlsbad and distant mountains.
     CLAIM TO FAME
The Crossings gets it’s name from the five bridges or “crossings” that connect throughout the course, many of which were designed and built to protect the natural habitat for wildlife and vegetation. With roughly 7-and-a-half miles of cart paths featuring several lengthy drives in between holes, you have plenty of time to appreciate the views and wildlife.
     THE HOLE TRUTH
Some of the more memorable holes at The Crossings include Nos. 7, 10 and 16. The seventh is a par 5 with a beautiful greenside waterfall. The lake connected to it protects the green, which is reachable in two for longer hitters who are willing to take the risk. No. 10 is a short par 4 that you may be tempted to try and drive, but with an elevated tee box, extremely narrow fairway, and a blind tee shot, the smart play is to hit an iron off the tee. The par-5 16th hole offers some of the most beautiful views on the course from its elevated tee box, but requires a 200-yard carry over the canyon.
     GREEN FEE RATES
$50-$115 depending on age and residency during the day.
Super twilight as low as $39.
